About This Print
The American bumblebee is in steep decline and at high risk of extinction. They have vanished entirely from at least 8 states and experienced significant population drops (near 90%) due mostly to climate change, habitat loss, pesticide use and disease. Bee loss has a catastrophic impact on our food supply. Bees pollinate one-third of global food crops like fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Their decline risks deficiencies in vital nutrients and dramatic rise in food costs due to reduced yields and reliance on expensive, less effective artificial pollination. Beyond food, healthy bee populations are crucial for ecosystem stability, supporting biodiversity and overall environmental
health. Bees are an indicator species, that is, their decline is the so-called “canary in the coal mine”, signaling broader ecological distress. (US Fish & Wildlife Service & US Geological Survey)
